The Mary Blake Over 30s Tournament was played tonight and with matches lasting just 9 minutes each way, they required commitment right from the opening whistle. This proved so true in the first game of the tournament St Lawrence (defending champions) and St Clement. The sharp shooting of St Clement Zoe Hotton was instrumental in taking her team to 4-1 lead in the first half, St Lawrence quickly recovered from the onslaught, making vital interceptions mid court, converting to much needed goals to bring the score-line to 6-5 in favour of St Lawrence. The standard of play produced from these 'Over 30s' was outstanding, it was neck and neck in the final stages producing a 14-12 victory for St Lawrence. St Saviour fielding a more 'mature' line up, brought back the services of defender Jenny Le Cocq, a player who has devoted her skills to the umpiring side of the sport rather than the playing side. It was obvious that she was relishing her time back in the action. St Ouen and St John combined their over 30 players to produce a team to participate, all players thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to participate in this long standing event. Linda Andrews (President of the JNA) presented the trophy to St Lawrence, explaining what a privilege it was to be doing so as Mary Blake had always played a major part in the JNA, she was remembered by so many of the members present and it was good to reflect on those memories. Final result 1 ST LAWRENCE 2 ACCIES 3 ST CLEMENT 4 ST OUEN/ST JOHN 5 ST SAVIOUR | With just a 5 minute reprieve in the break between matches, the next encounter proved to be another challenging encounter between Accies and St Lawrence. In short games of this nature, every thing hinges on which shooters have got their eye in and to St Lawrence's relief both Georgie Cottini GS and Rena Nelson GA were focussed and determined. Court play was, once again, very evenly matched, but the goals were not forthcoming for Accies benefit. The success of this match was crucial for the outcome of the tournament, as both teams knew and it was St Lawrence who stepped up to secure this win 17-10. All eyes were on the Accies v St Clement match, as these two teams had only suffered one defeat, therefore were vying for second place. It was a fiercely contested 18 minutes of play, with the amazing Sharon West showing her versatility by playing both centre position and GD (she was also seen to be netting the goals in a later game as GA!). But it was Accies who took control and claimed this victory. |
