Huge congratulations to Sheila Price who was awarded the Sid Guy Memorial Trophy at the Jersey Sports Counncil Dinner. This award is for those amazing volunteers who dedicate so much of their time to their chosen sport. Sheila is a qualified B Award umpire and is also a qualified Umpire Assessor. She has taken an active interest in the development of all JNA umpires, mentoring them and helping to run beginner umpiring courses including the last one in January 2018. She is always keen to know how umpires, new and experienced alike, are getting on with their umpiring.
Away from her club Sheila was the Jersey Netball Association Secretary between June 1978 and June 1984 being re-elected to the position 5 times. After a season away from the JNA’s committee she found her way back taking on the role of Fixtures Secretary from June 1985, a position which she held until June 1989. Even when she hasn’t been on the committee, when on Island Sheila has attended meetings as the St Saviours representative bar a short period of ill health in 2015/2016.
IN the early 1990s Sheila moved to the UK and took up the role of Chairwoman of Portsmouth Netball Association, making huge developments to the Association and modernising its way of working. She was their figurehead until she eventually retired from the role in 2007 as she was spending increasing amounts of time back in Jersey with her 2 children, and moved back here permanently.
Since returning Sheila straight away resumed her activities with St Saviour’s Netball Club and the JNA. She umpired the Summer Mixed Netball League during its first few seasons and has also run the table at Mixed Tournaments. Since its inception as part of the Jersey Netball Development programme, Sheila has assisted in the running of the Back 2 Netball sessions which allow players over 16 years of age a way back to netball regardless of when they last played. She helps takes warm ups, supports the coach in mini skill exercises and umpires game play at the weekly sessions.
Sheila is keen to keep up with netball and consequently she qualified as a Walking Netball Host in August 2017 and once the JNA sessions commenced in the following months she has attended the sessions to help out, take part and also provide home baked cakes for the socialising afterwards.
During the 2013/2014 Season Team Jets began to host their opposition at home games firstly at Les Ormes and now at Fort Regent. Ever since the first game, Sheila has helped to take entrance money and give out programmes, greeting regular attendees. Her regular assistance, excepting a period of illness in 2015/2016, has been invaluable.
In June 2014 Sheila was elected to the post of Tournament Fixtures Secretary running the annual JNA tournaments and adding her own Christmas versatility tournament to help raise funds for the JNA. During her 2 seasons in this role and at other times Sheila has run the table at JNA tournaments, collating scores and making sure things run smoothly. For many years Sheila has also assisted with the table and scoring at home events such as the Uptons and Inter-Insulars.
Always keen to help and be involved Sheila is a familiar face at all JNA events. She has been incredibly generous with her time in helping the running of JNA Development programmes and courses. She has also been a key part of St Saviour’s Netball Club dedicating so much time and energy over the last 50 years.
